Misconceptions of bookkeepers and accountants
It takes certain characteristics and a love of numbers to be an accountant or a bookkeeper, that’s for sure! Why is it though, that people stereotype bookkeepers and accountants as boring, geeky people? It’s wrong to stereotype anyone on what career choice they make but we find that this is a regular occurrence when meeting new people. So we want to get our point across to everyone, that you need to get to know us, to find out these stereotypical concepts are just not true!
Here’s what we hear all the time…
“People in Finance are boring”
It’s quite sad how often I hear this in our field! Yes, bookkeepers love working with numbers and enjoy problem solving. It involves expertise and dedication to get to the bottom of reconciliation problems we face each day, but how does that make us boring?
I’ve had a really interesting life and I’m told my story is really captivating to others. I grew up on a farm in Zimbabwe, when it wasn’t a safe place to live in. When driving anywhere we would always have firearms on us and it was too dangerous to go out at night.
I’m the type of person who always needs to keep busy. I think this comes from growing up on a farm, where the work never ends!
At first I rebelled against my passion for numbers and tried all kinds of other career choices first, from hairdressing to haberdashery! I always knew I was meant to have my own bookkeeping practice.
You see there’s much more to Bookkeepers’ and accountants than you think!
“Bookkeepers are Old Fashioned”
Bookkeeping dates back thousands of years! The earliest evidence of double entry bookkeeping dates back to 1299! That fact doesn’t make it old fashioned! In fact bookkeeping has evolved so much in this time.
It’s so important for bookkeepers and accountants to be up to date with the latest technology. We can’t possibly be old fashioned if we want to run a successful practice. By investing in cloud software Trekim Business Accounting can work virtually for clients across the UK. Cloud accounting gives you the freedom to access your finances 24/7 from anywhere you have an internet connection. Just get in touch with us to find out how it works!
“I don’t need a bookkeeper, I can do it myself”
Small businesses may think that it’s easy for them to keep on top of their bookkeeping. However, once you stop being consistent with your accounts they will spiral out of control. Bookkeeping is essential for all businesses. It’s a legal requirement to keep a track of your business income and outgoings, whether or not you do the books yourself or you hire a bookkeeper.
At Trekim we concentrate on helping larger businesses such as Limited companies in the ecommerce sector. With larger businesses there is a lot more legislation to consider and if you are not aware of it, it can cause trouble for you. It’s better to hire a professional to ensure that all bases are covered and that you are abiding by laws and regulations.
We can also help you to set your business goals by analysing your financial data to create cash flow forecasts so that you can plan ahead for the future success of your business. Something that you don’t necessarily have the expertise to do yourself.
“You only need to talk to your bookkeeper once a year”
This is the biggest misconception of them all! It’s important to keep in regular contact with your bookkeeper. By keeping them in the loop they will get to know your business requirements and the everyday workings of your business. We keep in touch with our clients at least on a monthly basis to ensure that there are no discrepancies in your bookkeeping. If there are any issues they can be dealt with quickly and efficiently so that they don’t get out of hand. Your Bookkeeper will offer you impartial advice, and should be your go to person for anything finance related.
“Bookkeepers and Accountants are expensive”
I think you would be pleasantly surprised to find out how much a bookkeeper or accountant charges. When you think of the time that they save you and the advice and support they can offer you, it’s a small price to pay to ensure your finances are in order. In fact your bookkeeper can help you to save money. They will audit your accounts and look at ways for you to cut costs.
